Bonjour! Today is Bastille Day and, since we can’t reach through the interwebs and hand you a tasty macaron to celebrate, we came up with this trés bien exclusive clip from the upcoming drama series, Versailles.

The show, which premieres on Ovation on Oct. 1, is set in 1667 and follows King Louis XIV’s obsessive quest to build the most impressive palace in all of Europe, which eventually becomes The Palace of Versailles. George Blagden of Vikings fame stars as Louis XIV, who is 28 years old when the show kicks off. Of course, no king would be complete without his court, and this one is rife with love, war, betrayal, murder, and all the other things that make for a good, juicy period drama.

In this clip, Louis and his brother Philippe d’Orléans (Alexander Vlahos) discuss war strategy, but the conversation quickly becomes a face-off full of psychological manipulation. The tense scene begins with Louis berating his brother for spending a ton of money on one pair of shoes. “Well, you haven’t seen the shoes,” Philippe replies with a smirk. Philippe also sheds some light on why Louis is so determined to build Versailles, saying, “You build your palace, I wear my clothes. As you always say, perception is everything.” With that, the conversation turns to war plans.

The series premiered in France and Canada in 2015, and will air in the U.S. on Ovation TV, starting with a two-hour premiere on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 10 p.m. ET. Watch the trailer here and see photos from the series below:
