Philip Pullman has dabbled in various literary genres, but he is probably best known as a fantasy novelist thanks to his popular series His Dark Materials. But now, the acclaimed author is turning his focus to comics: His first graphic novel is set to arrive next summer.

The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship will be the culmination of Pullman’s recent focus on comics and his character of John Blake. Pullman has been writing the serialized comic strip The Adventures of John Blake since 2008 in the weekly British anthology publication The DFC, now called The Phoenix.

John Blake is a story that’s close to my heart,” Pullman said in a release. “In Fred Fordham, John and the crew of the mysterious schooner The Mary Alice have found the ideal illustrator, and I’ve loved watching the story develop in his hands. The joy of the setting and the characters for me is that they’re capable of infinite variations. The Mary Alice can roam throughout time, past, present, and future, and anywhere on the oceans of the world. I hope readers will enjoy it as much as we have!”

The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship will follow John Blake and his ship as they travel through time, hoping to return a lost girl named Serena to her own era while also fighting the evil Dahlberg Corporation.

The graphic novel will be published by Scholastic in June 2017.
