Hailee Steinfeld tackles the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of high school in the new red-band trailer for coming-of-age dramedy The Edge of Seventeen.

The trailer, released Thursday, begins dramatically as Nadine (Steinfeld), confides in her history teacher (Woody Harrelson) that she plans to kill herself due to the trauma in her life. He promises to end his life as well, as he’s tired of students like Nadine interrupting his lunch hour. The dark humor continues throughout the four-minute-plus trailer, which reveals that the teen’s frustration stems from her best friend (Haley Lu Richardson) sleeping with her brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). Kyra Sedgwick also makes an appearance as Nadine’s well-meaning but ineffective mother on a mission to bring hope back into the young woman’s life.

Steinfeld received an Oscar nomination at age 14 for her role opposite Jeff Bridges in True Grit, and despite her numerous roles since, including Pitch Perfect 2, the new teen drama marks a milestone for the actress. “I remember reading the script and feeling like I’ve never connected with a contemporary piece the way I connected with this one before,” Steinfeld told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

The Edge of Seventeen hits theaters later this year.
