Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix have some company; Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to join their upcoming drama Mary Magdalene in a key role.

Representatives for the Oscar nominee confirm discussions are ongoing for the actor to board the Garth Davis-directed project opposite Mara, who plays the titular lead. Ejiofor is eyeing the role of Peter, one of Jesus’ (Phoenix) 12 apostles and his head disciple who denied him three times, but was forgiven after the Resurrection.

Davis, who previously directed several episodes of Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake series, is helming the project from a screenplay written by Helen Edmundson (An Inspector Calls) and Philippa Goslett (Little Ashes).

Mara and Davis also collaborated on the upcoming drama Lion, set for a Nov. 25 domestic release.

Deadline first broke the news of Ejiofor’s negotiations.
