From Khan to the Borg, the Star Trek franchise has a rich history of villains. This summer’s Star Trek Beyond will introduce the latest member of that evil tradition: Krall, the mysterious alien played by Idris Elba. On Tuesday, Paramount released a short online featurette on Krall, featuring the Star Trek Beyond cast and crew discussing his motivations.

“I wanted a character that is there to deconstruct the Federation’s ideals, but to do it in a way where he has a very valid philosophy,” director Justin Lin said.

Chris Pine called Krall “the soloist, the nihilist. Elba added that Krall is complex, with a long-standing, multi-layered hatred of the Federation that leads him to destroying the Enterprise and stranding Kirk’s crew on an alien planet.

“Watching the Enterprise crash and burn, it felt like I was destroying a legacy,” Elba said. “Krall is certainly going to be remembered for that.”
