Shawn Mendes has shared the video for “Treat You Better,” the hit first single from his forthcoming sophomore album, Illuminate.

The visual translates the song’s heartsick lyrics to screen. Mendes plays an unrequited lover, attempting to woo a young girl from her negligent boyfriend as he pines from the sidelines.

Its love-tangled storyline is reflective of the matured, ripped-from-his-diary themes Mendes promises for Illuminate.

“I think people will be surprised by how edgy we get with the lyrics and the concepts. Vocally, this album demolishes Handwritten, so people are not going to be ready for some of the songs in that sense,” he told EW earlier this month. “It’s more about getting deeper, getting into actual real life and what happened to me [in my life].”
