Liev Schreiber is mostly known these days for playing the titular tough guy on Ray Donovan, but his first movie role (for Nora Ephron’s Mixed Nuts) was something quite different. Schreiber played Chris, a transvestite who ends up dancing with Steve Martin’s character. As Schreiber told Conan O’Brien on Monday night, his very first day on set was a dance rehearsal with Martin. Not just any dance, either; they were doing the foxtrot, which involves one dancer sticking his leg between the others’ legs and leading them around.

“I sort of chuckled to myself, ‘Boy would this be inappropriate if I became aroused,'” Schreiber recalled. “Nothing could’ve been more inappropriate, so of course I get probably the best I’ve ever had in my life. I’m mortified because we haven’t even shook hands yet, and everytime he spins me it’s thwack into his leg.”

According to Schreiber, he immediately assumed he would be fired and never let onto a movie set again. Luckily, he said Martin was a consummate professional about it. “Steve is just looking up at the ceiling, swinging me around,” Schreiber said. “I want to say I’ve come a long way since then. And I should probably thank Steve, if he’s watching, for not saying anything.”
