Cypress Hill will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their 1991 debut with an extravagant reissue. Dubbed the “25th Anniversary Skull,” the special edition packaging will feature a black resin sculpture of the hip-hop pioneers’ signature skull logo, which fans can then peel back to unveil a remastered CD of their iconic first LP. Stock will be limited to 1,991 copies.
Cypress Hill‘s original release shot the band to stratospheric success, earning double platinum status and becoming their second most successful album to date. The anniversary set will also include a 100-plus-page book featuring interviews with the group about the making of the record, as well as photos taken from their archives. The project was three years in the making, according to Get On Down co-founder Papa D, who’s label will put out the revamped album.
“I thought it was a great idea; it goes along with the imagery that we’ve carried throughout the 25 years of our career,” Cypress Hill’s B-Real told Rolling Stone. “I saw the first round of it and it looked incredible, man … If there’s Cypress fans out there that got, like, a Cypress Hill trophy case, keep it with all the memorabilia.”
The re-issue adds to Cypress Hill’s already launched anniversary tour. Its next leg should kick off sometime around their annual Haunted Hill shows in October.
The West Coast mainstays have also been teasing new music. In an interview with HipHopDX in February, B-Real revealed that the group is working on an album titled Elephants on Acid that is “pretty much in the finishing stages,” but no details or release date have been announced. They last put out 2010’s Rise Up.
Meanwhile, B-Real will hit the road with Prophets of Rage, his newly formed supergroup with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and DJ Lord, and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. The 30-plus date trek kicks off July 19 in Cleveland, Ohio.
The 25th Anniversary Skull will be available for pre-sale on GetOnDown.com on Aug. 13. Watch Cypress Hill’s anniversary teaser below.
