As recently as five days ago, few seemed to care about Pokémon Go; now it’s all anyone thinks about. If you needed more proof that the new augmented-reality mobile app — which allows users to catch Pokémon out in the real world — had taken over the culture, look no further than the recent announcement by Spotify that the original Pokemon theme song was streamed more than any other track this weekend.
Plays of “Pokémon Theme,” a.k.a. “Gotta Catch ‘Em All,” a.k.a. “you teach me and I’ll teach you, POKEMON!!!” are up 362 percent since the release of Pokemon Go. In fact, the top five most-streamed tracks on Spotify right now are all Pokémon-related: “Pokémon Theme,” “Pokérap,” “Pokémon Johto,” “Go Pokémon Go,” and “I Want To Be A Hero,” respectively. If he moves fast enough, El-P might still have time to crack that top five.
As an added bonus, there are also somewhere around 200,000 Spotify playlists named “Pokémon,” with an additional “53,000” titled, simply, “Pikachu” (who, by the way, you can get as your Pokémon Go starter if you try hard enough).
But probably the best thing about streaming “Pokémon Theme” on Spotify is that it’s less likely to get you robbed or injured than playing Pokémon Go.
