Sing: Matthew McConaughey searches for next big animal singer in new trailer
Matthew McConaughey’s recent streak of amazing character names — see Rustin Cohle and Newton Knight — continues in the trailer for Sing, where he plays Buster Moon, a koala struggling to save his theater.
The animated film, written and directed by Garth Jennings, follows Buster as he decides to hold a singing contest to raise the money he needs. This opportunity proves to be life-changing for many of the town’s animal citizens, including Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), a pig with a house full of piglets, and Johnny (Taron Edgerton), a gorilla who doesn’t want to follow in his father’s criminal footsteps.
Scarlett Johansson, Seth MacFarlane, John C. Reilly, Tori Kelly, and Nick Kroll also star. A few of the songs sung in the trailer by the prospective competitors include Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda.”
The film comes from Illumination Entertainment, the company behind the Despicable Me franchise and The Secret Life of Pets, out Friday. It arrives in theaters Dec. 21.
