Kiefer Sutherland, one of the original actors in Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-fi horror film Flatliners, may be signing up for the reboot. The 24 actor is nearing a deal to join the new thriller, EW has confirmed.
Sutherland, 49, would play a seasoned doctor alongside young costars Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens. The remake is directed by Niels Arden Oplev, known for the Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Mr. Robot, from a screenplay by Ben Ripley, who wrote Source Code. Michael Douglas, who produced the original movie, and Laurence Mark are producing.
In the 1990 Flatliners, Sutherland played Nelson, a medical student who enlists his classmates (Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and William Baldwin) to conduct near-death experiments to learn about the afterlife.
The Flatliners reboot enters production later this week; Sutherland is set to star in ABC’s upcoming drama Designated Survivor playing a lower-level cabinet member forced into the presidency after a terrorist attack leaves him next in line.
