Kate Mara will play the tragic victim in Chappaquiddick. The former House of Cards star and Ed Helms have been cast in the political thriller, their reps confirm to EW.

Mara is set to portray Mary Jo Kopechne, the 28-year-old campaign worker who died in the infamous 1969 car crash. Jason Clarke is playing Sen. Ted Kennedy, who accidentally drove his car off a bridge and into the water below; Kopechne was trapped in the car and died, while Kennedy escaped. Kennedy later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of the crash after causing injury.

Helms has been tapped to play Joe Gargan, a cousin of Kennedy and one of two people whom the senator enlisted to help immediately after the accident instead of calling police.

John Curran (The Painted Veil) will direct the project from a screenplay by Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan. Mark Ciardi and Campbell McInnes of Apex Entertainment will produce.

Deadline first reported the news.
