Outlander Season 4 2018

On Saturday’s season 2 finale of Outlander, Richard Rankin will make his debut as Roger Wakefield, the love interest for Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna Randall (Sophie Skelton). Brianna and Roger‘s arrival in the story has been much anticipated — we’ve seen young Roger here and there throughout the series thus far — and Outlander fans are likely to find a new obsession in Rankin.

How do we know this? Well, for starters, Rankin is talented, not to mention incredibly handsome. The 33-year-old actor has a thick Scottish accent you could appreciate for days. But, also, we’ve seen him before. Rankin is no newbie to TV; he’s had lead roles on several shows as the romantic lead in period dramas and thrillers. Here are three shows to fill your inevitable need for a Rankin fix before season 3 of Outlander arrives.

1. The Syndicate

The Syndicate is an underrated anthology series about a group of people who win the lottery. (“Syndicate” refers to a registered group that people can enter the lottery together and then split the profits if they win.) Rankin stars in the third season, which follows a syndicate of colleagues working at a crumbling 21st century manor house under Lord Hazelwood. It’s a bit like a modern-day Downton Abbey: Like the Crawleys, the Hazelwoods are having financial problems but are desperate to keep Hazelwood Manor and preserve tradition. Rankin plays Sean McGary, a reserved gamekeeper in the home filled with cooks and maids. Sean’s tawdry secret causes some significant bumps in the road for his relationship with straight-laced manager Sarah Travers (Downton‘s Cara Theobold).

The first two seasons are streaming free on Hulu. Watch the trailer here.

2. The Crimson Field

In this BBC miniseries about a field hospital in France during World War I, Rankin plays Captain Thomas Gillan, a serious-minded surgeon who begins a romance with willful volunteer nurse Kitty Trevelyan (Oona Chaplin, Game of Thrones), although the hospital has a strict rule against romantic involvements. Their palpable chemistry makes their storyline is a compelling highlight of the series.

3. Thirteen

This show, currently airing on BBC America, follows Ivy Moxam (Jodie Comer), who was kidnapped at age 13 and escapes 13 years later. Rankin serves as Detective Inspector Elliot Carne. He and his partner, Detective Sergeant Lisa Merchant (Valene Kane), trade banter and barbs… among other things. Elliot is the more emotional of the pair, and he really lets the disturbing case get to him. Unfortunately, his sympathy toward Ivy causes her to form a taboo attachment.

Thirteen airs on Thursdays at 10 p.m. on BBC America. Watch the trailer here.

Outlander‘s second season finale airs Saturday at 9 p.m. on Starz.
