British actress and writer Caroline Aherne has died, according to the BBC. She was 52.

In the mid-’90s, Aherne co-wrote and starred in The Mrs. Merton Show, a chat show which aired on the BBC and found the actress playing the seemingly sweet, but actually sharp-tongued, host. Aherne also co-wrote and starred in the hugely popular sitcom The Royle Family, a TV show in which its cast of characters spent most of its time watching TV. The Mrs. Merton Show won the Best Talk Show BAFTA in 1997, and The Royle Family twice won the BAFTA for best sitcom, in 2000, when Aherne also won Best Comedy Performance, and 2007.

Aherne’s other credits included the sketch series The Fast Show and narrating the Channel 4 reality show, Gogglebox.

According to Aherne’s publicist, the actress died at her home Saturday from cancer.
