Robert Kirkman has gone to dark places on The Walking Dead, and he’s doing the same on Outcast, something that has left the show’s star Patrick Fugit trying to resist going there himself.

“The subject matter is pretty dark, and I think if I sat in that head space for too long I might get dark myself, which is certainly possible, but I try to avoid it,” he shares with EW about his role on the supernatural horror show.

In Cinemax’s Outcast, another adaption of a Kirkman comic, Fugit plays Kyle, a man who has been dealing with demonic possession his whole life, and now as an adult he finds himself searching for answers to why he faces these horrific problems.

The show began with Kyle’s family and responsibility being ripped away from him, sending him down a path of redemption in the first season. “[He is] starting to try to figure out how to get back with his family. There’s something he can do to piece the family back together, and that becomes a huge motivator for him,” Fugit says.

Catch up on the first four episodes of Outcast this Friday on Cinemax, and watch the next new episode Friday, July 8 at 10 p.m. ET.
