In case you were concerned Terrence Malick’s traditionally-broad, ever-philosophical scope had become too narrow in recent years, let the new trailer for the director’s cosmic odyssey, Voyage of Time, which explores the universe’s creation from the Big Bang to the age of the dinosaurs to present-day Earth, convince you otherwise.

The new clip shows off the final results of a project nearly 40 years in the making, as Malick devised the foundation for the ambitious film in the late 1970s under the title Q. The project evolved into the iconic filmmaker’s first documentary, which will feature a “panorama of awe-inspiring images” that “take you into the heart of monumental events never witnessed — from the birth of the stars and galaxies to the explosion of diverse life-forms on planet earth, including humankind—in immersive new ways that only IMAX can deliver,” according to a press release.

Voyage of Time is being released in two formats. Cate Blanchett will narrate an expanded, 90-minute version, subtitled Life’s Journey, while Brad Pitt narrates the 40-minute IMAX edition. Blanchett recently appeared in Malick’s Knight of Cups. Pitt previously starred in Malick’s The Tree of Life, which scored a Best Picture nomination after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2011.

Voyage of Time premieres Oct. 7 on IMAX screens. Watch the film’s new trailer in the video above, and check out the movie’s poster, below.
