Titanic is widely hailed as one of film’s most tragic love tales, famously breaking Rose’s (Kate Winslet) heart as Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) froze to death in the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty years after its release, Billy Zane is suggesting an alternative ending to the 1997 romance — but not the one fans might expect.
While on the Today show Tuesday, the actor suggested Rose should have ended up with his character, Cal — her pompous fiancé determined to keep the lovebirds apart. “I think he found redemption in the end, and I wish he had found her on [the rescue ship] Carpathia and was able to right his wrongs,” Zane said.

During the film, Cal did everything within his power to squash the budding romance. He had Jack arrested and handcuffed to a pipe, attempted to trick Rose into sailing away on a lifeboat without her newfound lover, and chased the couple through the flooding ship with a pistol. Still, Zane insists Cal wasn’t as villainous as he appeared.
“He was a little misunderstood,” he said. “I wasn’t the iceberg.”
