The series, which premieres Aug. 12, is set in New York's The Bronx in the 1970s
One of the most highly anticipated new series of the summer is definitely The Get Down from director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge). Netflix unveiled the latest teaser for the series, which premieres its first half of episodes on Aug. 12.
The Get Down follows a group of teens, including Books (Justice Smith) and Mylene (Herizen Guardiola), living in New York’s South Bronx amongst drug dealers and gangs. But the biggest conflict is over the two music genres defining the time. “The overview of this thing is that New York is in chaos,” supervising producer Nelson George tells EW. “Symbolically, disco and hip-hop are kind of at war with each other.”
While that may sound dark, George says it’s actually very much in step with Luhrmann’s work. “I can’t really say this is a TV show,” says George. “I would say this is a Baz Luhrmann extravaganza. This is like a big huge colorful party with story.”
