It is easy to imagine a lot of people deciding to fall asleep with the lights on after watching the extremely creepy new trailer for horror film Lights Out (out July 22). Directed by newcomer David F. Sandberg — and based on a short by the same filmmaker — the movie concerns a supernatural entity who haunts the darkness.

“What makes Lights Out so effective to me is how it deals with our everyday fear,” says director James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious), who is one of the film’s producers. “People are terrified of the dark. That is a top-five of fears that people have: darkness, night terrors. The short film David Sandberg came up with is, it’s so simple. Someone turns off the light and you think you see something in the darkness, but when you turn it back on, it’s not there. We’ve all had that kind of experience and so this movie really deals with that — taking that concept and making a feature out of it.”

Lights Outs stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello.
