Issa Rae may have honed her comedy chops online, but by the looks of it, they’ll fit just as well on the small screen.

In the first teaser for her upcoming HBO comedy Insecure, Rae pulls from her Shorty Award-winning web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, spinning everyday uncomfort into a string of hilariously self-aware punchlines. “Why you talk like a white girl?” a teenage girl asks Rae. “Ha, you caught me, I’m rocking black face,” she retorts to an awkwardly silent room.

As previously reported, Insecure centers on the “friendship of two modern-day black women, Issa (Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji), and all of their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations.” Rae will executive-produce alongside Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who doubles as the showrunner. The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmor will serve as a consultant; he and Rae created the show and co-wrote the pilot.

Insecure, which premieres this fall on HBO, also features Jay Ellis (The Game) and Lisa Joyce (Billy & Billie). Watch the teaser above.
