News broke Tuesday that Kevin Hart was producing an action-comedy film named Run the Jewels that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “centers on a group of failed rappers who attempt to rob an eccentric hip-hop mogul.” The only problem? One of the most popular groups in contemporary hip-hop is named Run the Jewels, and one of its members, El-P, says they weren’t consulted.
“Excuse me while I go starve a savage pack of lawyers for 7 days,” the rapper tweeted when he learned of the movie. He added that the executives at Universal, which is producing the movie, “prolly lost [our] number” but that “[it’s] cool we’ll be calling them.”
While Run the Jewels popularized the phrase from which they take their name, the origin of “run the jewels” dates back decades before the hip-hop duo formed in 2013. Run the Jewels has specifically cited the lyrics of LL Cool J’s “Cheesy Rat Blues,” off his 1990 album Mama Said Knock You Out, as inspiring their name.
“El came up with the name,” El-P’s Run the Jewels cohort Killer Mike told Interview in a 2013 interview. “When he first said it — not that I didn’t get it; it’s actually an old LL Cool J line, which is dope as f— — but I wasn’t sure.” In the same story, El-P confirmed their name was “a nod to the record,” elaborating that “that was the era that made me and Mike fall in love with rap music. For us, this project is about that. This whole project is really about our love for rap music.”
Universal did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment. See all of El-P’s tweets below.
