Oprah, Ava DuVernay series 'Queen Sugar' first teaser
The first teaser for Ava DuVernay’s original drama series Queen Sugar is here, and it doesn’t disappoint.
OWN’s upcoming series will follow the Bordelon siblings as they navigate a recent family tragedy. Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) play the siblings who must deal with rocky family ties while running a sugarcane farm in the Deep South.
The teaser, above, reveals quick shots of the drama that will unfold on the series, while an escalating drumbeat accents the images. In February, DuVernay — whose previous movies Selma and Middle of Nowhere were praised for their powerful storytelling and strong performances — promised diversity in the series, both in front of an behind the camera.
Based on the Natalie Baszile novel, woman will direct each of the episodes. The independent filmmakers involved include Tina Mabry, Tanya Hamilton, Neema Barnette, So Yong Kim, Victoria Mahoney, and Salli Richardson-Whitfield.
DuVernay developed Queen Sugar for television and will executive produce alongside Oprah Winfrey and Melissa Carter.
