One of the most memorable moments in the first Independence Day is when Captain Hiller (Will Smith) socks an extraterrestrial square in the face. “Welcome to Earth,” he shouts, and the alien was indeed welcomed.

The scene is so iconic, in fact, that Independence Day: Resurgence star Liam Hemsworth said during a recent SiriusXM Town Hall he wanted a similar moment. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the script.

“I went to Roland [Emmerich, the director] and the writers and I said, ‘I really feel like we need a physical altercation: I want to punch an alien in the face,'” he says.

So it happened — albeit somewhat differently, Hemsworth teased — and ended up being his favorite scene to shoot. Even if he was incredibly ill while doing so.

“I got this terrible stomach flu, and in between every take, I was throwing up in trashcans,” he recalls.
