Ellen Barkin! Scott Speedman! Surfing! There are plenty of gritty basic-cable sagas about crime families living on the fringes of society, but only one has all the curious ingredients listed above. To Tell the Truth
ABC, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Game shows are having a bit of a comeback in network-land. Among the new crop is this series, which reboots the old franchise, puts Anthony Anderson at the helm, and adds the likes of Betty White and NeNe Leakes as cast members. The first episode will feature Anderson’s black-ish costar Tracee Ellis Ross as the special celebrity guest, while the 10 p.m. installment brings on comic Iliza Shlesinger.
ABC, 9 p.m.
Rebooting an iconic John Hughes/John Candy movie is a risky proposition, even for the family-comedy wizards at ABC. And while this new Uncle Buck (which will premiere with two back-to-back episodes) may not live up to the original, it does boast a key building block in Mike Epps, the funny, charismatic comic actor who assumes the title role.
TBS, 10 p.m.
Would you have enjoyed Lost as much if it had more JOKES? Let’s find out with this new sitcom about plane-crash survivors stranded on, yes, a desert island. The humor can be pretty lowbrow (the first two episodes end in barfing), but it’s got an agreeable cast, including the excellent Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords and one the best episodes from the recent X-Files revival.
