Author John Green used his vlog to pay tribute to the victims who were killed in the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday morning. In the video, Green reads excerpts from tributes written by victims’ loved ones, and then reads all of their names in remembrance.

“I don’t know what to say; I don’t know if I have anything constructive to say,” Green said. “I really just want to share with you the names of the people who were murdered. I think we should hear their names as much as possible.”

At the beginning of the video, Green talks about his childhood growing up in Orlando. Though Green was born in Indianapolis, he spent the bulk of his childhood in the Florida city and in Birmingham, Alabama. The author admits that he never felt at home in Orlando, but praises the Latino and LGBT communities for making the city great and vibrant.

Since the Orlando attacks, Green has retweeted a number of tributes to the victims on his Twitter account. He also wrote, “When you politicize LGBT people’s entire life as Other, you don’t get to claim their deaths belong to you.”
