Netflix continues its forray into film with the acquisition of sci-fi romance drama The Discovery.

Starring Rooney Mara (Carol), Jason Segel (The End of the Tour), and Robert Redford (Truth), the film tells the story of a scientist (Redford) who proves the existence of the afterlife and the ensuing romance between his son Will (Segel) and Isla (Mara), a woman “haunted by a tragic past.” Director Charlie McDowell (Silicon Valley) once again teamed up with his The One I Love co-writer Justin Lader to pen the script.

Netflix chief content office Ted Sarandos said, “To describe the story as original doesn’t begin to capture the world that Charlie has created that will envelop you. Our global viewers are going to love this film.”

McDowell’s The Discovery just the latest original film to be released by Netflix. Coming later this year are The Fundamentals of Caring (starring Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez) on June 24; Tallulah (starring Ellen Page and Allison Janney) on July 29; and the highly-anticipated animated film The Little Prince on August 5.

The Discovery will premiere globally on Netflix and in select theatres in 2017.
