While reading for the role of FBI agent Dom DiPierro, Grace Gummer was happy to see a familiar face in Rami Malek, her Larry Crowne costar, but she was completely in the dark when it came to Mr. Robot. “I knew nothing about it,” she told EW. “I thought it was a sci-fi show.”

Instead of binging on the first season before her audition, Gummer did a different kind of prep: “I actually watched The Real Housewives of New Jersey because I play an FBI agent from New Jersey, so I needed to get into the mode,” she said. “I had some episodes saved on my computer because I’m a big fan of that show.”

As “the Javert to fsociety and Elliot,” DiPierro has a complicated relationship with our hacking heroes, one that may be more complex than cat and mouse. “Elliot and I are sort of connected in a way,” Gummer said. “It’s left up to the audience to decide which side they’re on.”
