Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell lent her voice to a recent Audible production of The Oedpius Plays, in which she plays the timeless role of Antigone.
“My background is in classical theatre, and that for me is where I got a sense of how ‘family’ can exist in the theatre,” Atwell says. “When you are part of an acting community as we have been during these days we have been recording the Theban plays, you also realize you are part of a tradition that has been passed down — and hopefully we will continue to pass it down to the next generation. It is a way of keeping these texts alive.”
In Atwell’s opinion, Sophocles’ works translate especially well to the audiobook format. “These particular plays… were written to be heard, first and foremost,” she says. “Seeing them was kind of secondary. That’s why [they’re] so wordy — nothing very visual happens!”
