Tony Awards 2016 winners list
'Hamilton' wins best musical, and 11 awards overall
- Stage
The story of tonight was a big one for Hamilton at the Tony Awards.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking hip-hop musical about the life of Alexander Hamilton captured the Best Musical prize on Sunday, one of 11 awards the show won overall.
Two of those awards went directly to Miranda (for the Hamilton book and its original score), and others went to lead actor Leslie Odom Jr., featured actor Daveed Diggs, and featured actress Renee Elise Goldsberry. Hamilton also won for best costume design, lighting design, direction, choreography, and orchestrations. The show went into Tonys night with a record-setting 16 nominations, but ultimately didn’t break or tie the record for the most wins set by The Producers, with 12 in 2001.
In a year where the Academy Awards were criticized for a lack of diversity among its nominees and winners, all four actors who won top musical awards were people of color.
All the Best Musical nominees performed during the telecast, which aired live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The nominees for Best Revival of a Musical also performed, and Gloria Estefan took the stage for a performance with the cast of On Your Feet.

At the beginning of the awards ceremony, host James Corden paid tribute to the victims of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that happened earlier on Sunday morning.
“All we can say is you are not on your own right now. Your tragedy is our tragedy. Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality, and gender is equal, embraced, and loved,” he said. “Hate will never win. Together, we have to make sure of that. Tonight’s show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle.”
