It wasn’t even one year ago when Voice alum Christina Grimmie was sitting down with PEOPLE to talk about her career, her work with Adam Levine, her love of Miley Cyrus and her brand new single.

Ten months after that interview, Grimmie was shot dead Friday in Florida after a man approached her and opened fire as she signed autographs, police said.

It’s a tragedy that makes her PEOPLE Now interview more acute.

As the 22-year-old said then, of working with Levine, her former Voice coach: “He’s kind of all over the place. It’s hilarious, actually, to me.”

“His mind is in a million different places,” she said, partially because he is so creative.

And of Cyrus, whose hit songs, in part, helped Grimmie be discovered: “I mean, it’s kind of like Miley’s the lucky charm now,” she said.

“She was definitely my favorite growing up, for sure,” she said.

As word of Grimmie’s death spread this weekend, many other stars who paid tribute to her, including Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Colton Haynes and more.

Voice coach Blake Shelton said he was “stunned and disgusted” by the news.

And in a statement to PEOPLE, Levine said, “[My wife] Behati and I are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by Christina Grimmie’s tragic death.

“Our hearts go out to her family. Christina was a natural, a gifted talent that comes along so rarely. She was taken from us too soon.”
