In the Heights movie: Jon M. Chu in talks to direct Lin-Manuel Miranda musical adaptation
Jon M. Chu might be taking his talents back to the musical world.
The Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Now You See Me 2 director is in early talks to direct the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights, a source tells EW.
The Weinstein Co. resuscitated the cinematic take on Miranda’s first musical last month, pulling aboard the musical’s book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes to pen the screenplay. Universal had worked on adapting it, but put their efforts on ice in 2011.
Premiering on Broadway in 2008, the Tony Award-winning In The Heights tracked a bevy of characters in the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights. A bodega owner (a role originally played by Miranda) comes into a fortune and struggles with his feelings about leaving the city and shutting down his shop to move to his homeland of the Dominican Republic with his aging grandmother.

Stage producer Scott Sanders (Evita, The Color Purple) and his production company will produce the movie.
