Today show: Savannah Guthrie pregnant, will skip Olympics over Zika virus
Savannah Guthrie announced on the Today show Tuesday morning that she is pregnant with her second child. The news was met with hugs and congratulations from her co-anchors, but Guthrie also revealed that her pregnancy will keep her from the upcoming summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
“I’m not going to be able to go to Rio, the doctors say, because of the Zika virus,” Guthrie said on the show.
An outbreak of the Zika virus began in Brazil last year, and the infection can be spread from pregnant mothers to their fetuses, causing potential defects at birth. Guthrie is the latest name to withdraw from traveling to Rio for the Olympic Games; a number of athletes and reporters have stated they will not make the trip, citing concerns about the Zika virus.
Although a number of health officials have voiced concerns over holding the Olympics in Rio this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued a response saying that there is not a pressing need to move or delay the event.
