Casual episode 2: Jason Reitman goes behind the scenes
Every week the cast and crew of Hulu’s dark comedy Casual will be taking EW behind the scenes: For each episode, one member will be recapping and sharing their thoughts on what went down in addition to walking us through the ins-and-outs of the show. Director and EP Jason Reitman walked us through the first episode and continues here with episode 2, “Trivial Pursuit”…
We talk a lot about images and sounds when we talk about filmmaking. But you know what we don’t talk about enough? Smells. Ask any cast or crew member on Casual and they’ll tell you that when the smell of toasted buttermilk begins wafting out from the stage doors, it can mean only one thing. Everybody’s favorite shooting day… Waffle Porn.
While season 1 opted for an elegant approach, this year we went full Breaking Bad. From the rising smoke and careful execution, you’d swear Walter was making blue crystal in the Winny — but in fact it’s Alex stacking up some Belgians. In order to pull off the Cyndi Lauper-accompanied sequence, four waffle-makers cooked for hours in the background as gallons of batter were mixed. The same safety glass used for action sequences were deployed, and one of our griddles was outfitted with a GoPro.
For those of you fearing that these waffles went to waste… please speak to our grip and electric departments.

One of the reasons it’s such a rare joy to direct Casual is that it never feels like we’re forcing ourselves into a directorial mold. While we’ve established a specific tone, there’s no “one right way” to shoot the show. I think that’s exactly the reason we’ve been able to get such an incredible group of filmmakers to direct season 2, including Girlfight‘s Karyn Kusama, Diary of a Teenage Girl‘s Marielle Heller, and Your Sister’s Sister‘s Lynn Shelton.
Unfortunately, they don’t all get to shoot waffle porn.
New episodes of Casual stream Wednesdays on Hulu.
