Earlier this week, Christian rock singer Trey Pearson came out as gay in an open letter to his fans. Pearson is the lead singer of Everyday Sunday, the band behind a number of Christian rock hits, such as “Wake Up! Wake Up!” and “Best Night of Our Lives.”
In his letter, Pearson writes about coming to terms with his sexuality and after being raised in a conservative Christian household.
“I never wanted to be gay,” Pearson writes. “I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it never was an option for me… I’ve tried my whole life to be straight. I married a girl, and I even have two beautiful little kids.”
Pearson goes on to talk about his marriage to his wife Lauren. According to the singer, he had tried his best to make the marriage work, but was never able to fully suppress who he really is. Now, the two remain good friends and work together to co-parent their two children.
“If this honesty with myself about who I am, and who I was made by God to be, doesn’t constitute as the peace that passes all understanding, then I don’t know what does,” Pearson writes. “It is like this weight I have been carrying my whole life has been lifted from me, and I have never felt such freedom.”
