More than three decades ago, three 11-year-olds in Mississippi embarked on a seven-year quest to remake Raiders of the Lost Ark as a shot-for-shot fan film. Now, with the 35th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s classic soon approaching, Drafthouse is releasing a documentary chronicling their efforts, titled Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made. And ahead of Raiders!’ release, Drafthouse has cut together a side-by-side comparison of the trio’s fan-shot footage and the original Lost Ark trailer.

The original ‘80s footage is a bit grainy, but the side-by-side comparison shows just how meticulously the trio recreated each frame, whether that’s Indy wielding his bullwhip or Toht menacing Marion with a hot poker.

Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made recounts the boys’ original quest, as well as how their film became a cinematic legend in the years to follow. The doc includes interviews with fans like John Rhys Davies and Eli Roth, as well as the trio’s reunion, years later, to complete the only sequence they could never finish: the explosive airplane fight scene.

Raiders! will hit limited theaters and VOD on June 17. Watch the side-by-side trailer comparison above.
