Idina Menzel addresses campaign to give Elsa from 'Frozen' a girlfriend
The thought of Elsa having a female love interest? Fans can’t seem to let it go, and now the voice behind the Frozen character has responded to a petition calling for the animated princess to have a girlfriend in future installments of the series.
Speaking to ET on the red carpet at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, star Idina Menzel addressed the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend social media campaign aimed at getting Disney to give the iconic character a same-sex partner in the upcoming Frozen 2.
“I think it’s great,” the Broadway star and actress told ET. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.” When asked if she’d support the decision if it were to happen, Menzel responded: “No matter what,” as the character “changed my life.”
Kristen Bell, the actress who voices Princess Anna in Frozen, recently commented on the sequel’s development, telling Collider during a March interview: “They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month. The story is great, and they exude quality. What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn’t just put something out to put it out. That’s why it took them so long to even announce that we were doing a second one.”
While a premiere date and further details on the plot of Frozen 2 have yet to emerge, fans can soon literally immerse themselves in the world of the film, as a ride based on the original Frozen movie is set to open this summer inside EPCOT’s Norway pavilion at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
