Warning: This story contains major spoilers from Monday’s episode of 12 Monkeys. Read at your own risk!

Just as Cole thought he was going to finally meet the Witness, it was Railly who came face-to-face with the mysterious antagonist during Monday’s episode of 12 Monkeys.

In the wake of undergoing an immersion by drinking the Red Forest tea, Railly (Amanda Schull) once again saw who viewers thought was the Witness, Aaron (Noah Bean). But, it turns out, the Witness only appeared to Railly that way in her mind.

Speaking of her mind, the Witness has definitely done something to it, as Railly’s eyes turned as black as the Witness’ when he swapped faces from Aaron to Cole. Has Railly been possessed? “Stay tuned,” executive producer Terry Matalas says cryptically. “It will have a serious effect on her and everybody around her.”

But Railly’s meeting with the Witness begs the question of how he can travel in time. “It is a bit of a mystery,” Matalas says. “We know that he has manipulated events throughout time, but we also see that he can get in people’s heads. In order for Olivia [Alisen Down] to communicate with him, she has to drink this tea made from leaves that have been altered by the distortion of space and time, and go into this house where there’s writing on the walls. So, he is a bit otherworldly. The question is: Will we meet him face-to-face?”

With the reveal that the Witness is not Aaron, EW can confirm his fate after Railly’s former fling, who appeared to perish in a fire last season: “Aaron is dead,” Matalas says. However, “We haven’t seen the last of Aaron in the series, though, not by a long shot.”

12 Monkeys airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.
