Coldplay showed up on The Late Show Tuesday night, but it wasn’t just to play their new songs like “Hymn for the Weekend.” In the episode’s cold open, singer Chris Martin provided host Stephen Colbert with his tips for improving the show’s theme song, Namely, Martin said, they needed to add lyrics. His contribution, however, was not Coldplay-style sad poetry, but simply singing what the theme song’s instrumentals sounded like: “shooby doo doo doop.”

The host was skeptical at first, but then came around to Martin’s side. “You’re a f—ing genius,” Colbert said.

Then the theme song commenced, with a guest spot from Martin singing his “lyrics” and chuckling to himself. Watch the clip below.
