Russell Crowe knows that when it comes to doing action scenes, his younger costars might be intimidated by his string of tough-guy roles.
“When their references really are … L.A. Confidential, Gladiator, stuff like that, they’re scared s—less that it’s gonna be for real,” Crowe told EW’s Clark Collis on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio.
Such was the case for Matt Bomer (White Collar, Magic Mike), who costars with Crowe and Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys. In one of their first scenes together, Crowe had to strangle Bomer. “I was also like, ‘Is Russell really going to choke me out in this take?’” Bomer said. “And I was like, ‘I’m cool with that if he is, but maybe that’s going to happen.’”
Instead, Crowe shared some action tips with Bomer, albeit with a bit of humor; before the first take, with his hands wrapped around Bomer’s neck, he whispered, “Hey Matt… this is for Magic Mike.”
