Dylan O’Brien is in talks to play CIA counter-terrorism operative Mitch Rapp in American Assassin, EW has confirmed.

O’Brien would join Michael Keaton in CBS Films and Lionsgate’s adaptation of Vince Flynn’s bestselling novel series, playing Rapp, a young recruit reeling from the death of his fiancée in a terrorist attack. Keaton is already set to star as Stan Hurley, a Cold War veteran who trains Rapp to become a ruthless spy, and there are plans for American Assassin to be the launch of a series.

Kill the Messenger director Michael Cuesta is helming the project, based on a screenplay by The Americans writer Stephen Schiff. Flynn, who died in 2013, wrote a total of 13 novels about Mitch Rapp, with American Assassin as the first chronological novel in the series.

The news of O’Brien’s potential involvement comes as he’s recovering from injuries sustained on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Production on American Assassin is set to begin this summer.
