Watch Rita Moreno rap in her Berklee commencement address
The accomplished Rita Moreno has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony for her acting and singing, but it turns out that the EGOT winner has some rap skills, too.
Moreno gave this year’s commencement address at Berklee, and while the first half of her time on stage was a standard inspirational speech directed toward graduating students, the 84-year-old actress soon broke into a rap, encouraging the audience to pursue their passion.
“Your talent may be terrific, your writing prolific, but do you have the motivation to use your creation for this generation?” she rapped.
She closed out her speech by adding that her bars were inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash Broadway musical Hamilton.
“It’s Mr. Hamilton who brought the rhyme to mind. Damn, I’ve seen that play three times,” Moreno rapped. “Burned in my mind, Lin caused this crime of mine, so I read him his Miranda rights.”
In addition to giving rapping the commencement address, Moreno received an honorary doctor of music degree, along with the Isley Brothers, Milton Nascimento, and Lucian Grainge.
