Queen of Katwe: Lupita Nyong’o shares first footage from chess drama
Between Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Jungle Book, Lupita Nyong’o has lent her voice to some of the year’s biggest box office hits, but the Oscar winner will soon be returning to the screen with a live-action role in Queen of Katwe. Now, Nyong’o has shared the first clip from the upcoming Disney drama to tease its full trailer, dropping on Tuesday.
Based on Tim Crothers’ book (which was first adapted from an ESPN the Magazine feature), Queen of Katwe tells the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young prodigy living in rural Uganda who’s introduced to the game of chess. She takes to the game immediately, and with the help of her family and community, she pursues her dream of becoming an international champion. Newcomer Madina Nalwanga stars as Phiona, with Nyong’o playing her mother and David Oyelowo playing a local missionary.
“It’s my absolute joy to share the first look of Queen of Katwe,” Nyong’o wrote on Twitter. “This movie proves that daring to dream is worth it.”
Monsoon Wedding director Mira Nair helmed Queen of Katwe, which was largely shot on location in Uganda. William Wheeler wrote the screenplay.
Queen of Katwe is slated for limited release on Sept. 23. Watch the teaser clip below, and check back Tuesday for the full trailer.
