Brie Larson may have won an Oscar for one of 2015’s most heartbreaking performances in Room, but the first-time Saturday Night Live host has more than enough comedic talent to pull from for her trip to Studio 8H.
Larson takes the SNL stage after a whirlwind awards season of wins, but she has a long list of brief but memorable roles in comedies, both in theaters and on TV. 2015 also saw her pop up briefly as Amy Schumer’s sister in Trainwreck, while she’s previously appeared in the 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World adaptations, and as a love interest for Abed in Community. (In fact, she was probably the best new addition in that show’s much maligned Dan Harmon-less season 4.)
Larson also has a musical past, including a full debut album from 2005, as well as a solid cover of Metric’s “Black Sheep” in Scott Pilgrim, so it wouldn’t be a shock for the show to put her pipes to use in another pre-recorded song.
So there’s little reason to worry that Larson will struggle to fit in with the SNL cast. And with a couple of weeks off, hopefully the SNL writers and players have had time to recharge and hit this last stretch of episodes with some quality material. April proved to be a particularly uneven-to-disappointing month for the show this season, but Larson kicks off a trio of final episodes in which the show will likely either stick to what it knows or dip a toe in some new waters ahead of its changes next season. (Hopefully whatever route the show takes this week, it finds some time for a cameo from Larson’s Room co-star Jacob Tremblay.)
Larson will be joined by musical guest Alicia Keys, performing for the third time in Studio 8H. Her appearance comes only days after her first released single in years, “In Common,” so certainly expect to hear the new single on stage. And as Keys is no stranger to cameoing or guest starring as herself in roles (including recently on Empire), it wouldn’t be shocking for her to show up in a sketch or two as well.
Whatever does happen, come talk about the episode live as it happens and stay tuned to EW.com on Sunday for a full recap of the show.
