Melissa Benoist is headed from National City to Boston. The Supergirl star has joined the cast of Patriots Day, CBS and Lionsgate’s film about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the manhunt for the perpetrators, the studios announced Thursday.

Benoist will play Katherine Russell, the wife of bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Also boarding the film are Khandi Alexander as a law enforcement interrogator and Jake Picking as MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.

Currently in production in Boston, Patriots Day stars Mark Wahlberg as Sgt. Tommy Saunders (a composite character), Michelle Monaghan as wife Carol Saunders, John Goodman as Police Commissioner Ed Davis, and Kevin Bacon as FBI Agent Richard DesLauriers.

Peter Berg is directing from a script by Matt Charman, based on Davis’ firsthand account. The film will open in Boston, New York, and Los Angeles on Dec. 21.
