Dear White People (2014)

The 2014 campus satire Dear White People addressed race issues on college campuses in America. Now, its writer and director, Justin Simien, has even more opportunities to talk about these issues: A comedy series based on and with the same name as the film was just picked up by Netflix to go into production later this year.

The Dear White People series will follow a diverse group of students at a fictional Ivy League college that sweeps the racial tensions of its campus under the rug. Billed as a comedy series, Dear White People will stream 10 30-minute episodes in 2017. Simien is writing the series and directing the first episode. There’s no word yet on casting.

“During the film’s release, I had the pleasure to speak with hundreds of students and faculty across a variety of college campuses dealing with these very issues in real time,” Simien said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to have this platform — not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views.”
