Adam Gidwitz, author of the New York Times best-selling Grimm trilogy, is gearing up to release his latest middle grade tale this September. The Inquisitor’s Tale is set in 1242, and follows a group of travelers as they tell stories about three children: Willem, on a mission from his monastery, Jacob, a Jewish boy whose village was burned, and Jeanne, a peasant who has prophetic visions. EW is proud to reveal both the cover and an excerpt, with illustrations by Hatem Aly, as a traditional “illuminated” manuscript would have been in medieval times.

Check everything out below, and pick up your copy of The Inquisitor’s Tale on September 27.
