Though they had their fair share of issues in the two-part 12 Monkeys premiere, Cole and Railly head to the past in a bid to take down the mysterious Messengers during Monday’s episode.

But their mission to the 1940s won’t be easy — as evidenced in the exclusive sneak peek above — since Cole (Aaron Stanford) and Railly’s (Amanda Schull) relationship is tenuous at best. He sent her to the future, she left him in the past. It’s rough.

“He’s very hurt, but I think this Cole is a little bit more patient, a little bit more understanding, and has spent so much time blaming himself for what she’s turned into that he is going to take a beat and try to connect with her in a more patient way, in a way that we haven’t seen Cole be before,” executive producer Terry Matalas tells EW. 12 Monkeys airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.

Syfy takes on the original time-traveling film in a weekly series format.
