Fear the Walking Dead: Mercedes Mason on possible Ofelia–Alicia romance
There has not been a whole heck of a lot of romance on Fear the Walking Dead, what with the zombie apocalypse and all. Now that the survivors are all sharing a boat, the chance for love on the water is not so great either — although Madison and Travis certainly got close to being close before a floating zombie went and clogged their motor, which, incidentally, is not a euphemism.
But that won’t stop fans from shipping certain couples. So when Fear the Walking Dead star Mercedes Mason stopped by Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM, channel 105) Thursday morning, we wanted to know with whom she was hearing fans wanted to see her character, Ofelia. It turns out the two leading candidates for a love connection both share the same last name.
“They’re dividing me with the Clarks,” says Mason. “Either with Alicia or with Nick. And I think because there have been some scenes cut with Alicia and Ofelia — which, I don’t know if it wise time-wise or they changed the idea of where the story was going, but some of those scenes were released — so I think the fans were like, ‘Oh my God, look at the chemistry between the two.’ And now with Nick as well.”
Sounds like we need to settle this thing with a good ol’ fashioned sibling brawl! But that’s what the fans want. What does Mason desire for Ofelia when it comes to matters of the heart? “If Ofelia were to hook up with a woman — you know, Alicia might be a little young, and there is sort of more of a sister relationship at this point — but if she were to hook up with a woman, it would really sort of color season 1. One, for me as an actress, that would be amazing. But two, it would really color how she dealt with the commander guy who she was luring in. It would really color what she was doing there and what that says about her character. Because then that’s not a crush anymore — it’s a very manipulative concept, which I think is super cool.”
Does this mean Ofelia will find love with a fellow female in the future? We’ll have to wait to find out, but you can hear Mason’s thoughts on the matter for yourself by clicking on the SoundCloud clip above. And for more Fear the Walking Dead coverage, you can follow me on Twitter @DaltonRoss.
