From one musical heartthrob to another: Empire star Bryshere Y. Gray has been cast in BET’s upcoming New Edition biopic, the network announced at their upfront presentation on Wednesday. Known for his role as Hakeem Lyon on the blockbuster Fox drama, Gray will play Michael Bivins, one of the founders of the seminal boy band known for hits like “Cool It Now.”

Rounding out the cast is Elijah Kelley as Ricky Bell, Luke James as Johnny Gill, Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant, Straight Outta Compton‘s Keith Powers as Ronnie DeVoe, and Woody McClain as Bobby Brown.

New Edition: The Movie will have three parts, following the band from middle school (Bivins, Brown, and Bell were childhood friends) through their heyday in the ’70s and ’80s. The miniseries is set to begin filming next month in L.A., and is set to debut on BET sometime in 2017.

Lee Daniels and Danny Strong created this Fox drama about a kingpin of hip-hop (played by Terrence Howard) and his family, who fight him for control of the empire.
