Robert Kirkman and Brian K. Vaughan talk 'Walking Dead' collaboration
Last year, comics writer Brian K. Vaughan dropped a major bombshell when the Saga scribe revealed that he and Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman had cooked up a rather unusual deal. Vaughan would allow Kirkman’s Image imprint Skybound to put out a hardcover version of Vaughan and artist Marcos Martín’s title The Private Eye — initially published on the pair’s pay-what-you-want-website Panel Syndicate — and, in exchange, Kirkman would let Vaughan write a one-off Walking Dead adventure.
“The whole time we were doing The Private Eye, Robert Kirkman at Image was saying, ‘Why won’t you let us do a print version?'” Vaughan explained. “We jokingly said to Robert, ‘If Image gives us Walking Dead, we will give Image Private Eye.’ And Kirkman said, ‘Sold!’ He sort of called our bluff. So, we’re going to do an exclusive one-shot [of The Walking Dead]. I’m writing it, and Marcos is going to do art, and it will be available digitally for whatever price you think is fair.”
As of today, that Vaughan-penned Walking Dead adventure, which is titled The Alien, is indeed available to buy at Panel Syndicate. You can see a video in which Kirkman and Vaughan talk more about the comic above and some exclusive preliminary sketches from the project, below.
